About Insightful Psychology
Insightful Psychology is an independent psychological practice offering formulation-led assessment and therapy across the lifespan. The work is grounded in clinical depth, ethical clarity, and careful attention to complexity rather than quick categorisation or protocol-driven solutions.

Who Therapy Is For
Therapy is open to anyone seeking professional psychological support for distress, personal growth, life transitions, or deeper self-understanding. You do not need a diagnosis to access therapy. Many people begin therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply aware that something needs to change.
Therapy is a collaborative process. It is not something done to you, but rather something we do together. Sessions are paced according to what feels manageable and meaningful for you, and the work is always shaped around your individual goals and values.
Whether you are seeking short-term, focused work or longer-term, exploratory therapy, the approach remains flexible, psychologically informed, and grounded in respect for your autonomy and expertise in your own experience.
Psychological Assessments
Insightful Psychology offers comprehensive Autism (ASD), ADHD, and differential psychological assessments across the lifespan. Assessments are formulation-led and aim to support clarity, understanding, and practical recommendations rather than pursuing a predetermined outcome.
Assessment is not simply about meeting diagnostic criteria. It is a thoughtful, collaborative process that integrates clinical interviews, developmental history, recognised assessment tools where appropriate, and psychological formulation. The goal is always to understand the individual holistically, not to reduce complexity to a label.
Where diagnostic criteria are met, this is explained clearly, and recommendations are tailored to support wellbeing, access to services, and reasonable adjustments. Where criteria are not met, alternative formulations and next steps are discussed transparently and with care.
Assessments Offered
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment
Comprehensive assessment for children, teenagers, and adults, including use of gold-standard tools where clinically indicated, developmental history, and formulation.
ADHD Assessment
Psychology-led assessment (non-medication) for inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity across the lifespan, with particular attention to differential diagnosis.
Combined ASD and ADHD Assessment
Integrated assessment for individuals where both autism and ADHD are being considered, recognising the complexity and overlap between presentations.
Dyslexia and Learning Differences (Adults)
Case-by-case assessment focusing on learning profile, strengths, and functional impact, particularly in work and daily life contexts.
Differential Psychological Assessment
Where there is uncertainty about the underlying nature of difficulties, a broader psychological assessment can help clarify the formulation and recommend next steps.
What the Assessment Includes
Every assessment is tailored to the individual, but typically includes the following components to ensure a thorough and psychologically rigorous evaluation:
01
Pre-assessment Questionnaires
Standardised rating scales and background information forms to be completed before the assessment begins, providing essential context and developmental history.
02
At Least Two Clinical Appointments
Face-to-face or online sessions, typically lasting 60–90 minutes each, allowing sufficient time for detailed exploration and clinical observation.
03
Clinical Interview and Developmental History
In-depth discussion of current difficulties, developmental milestones, family history, educational and occupational functioning, and relational patterns.
04
Use of Recognised Assessment Tools
Where clinically appropriate, gold-standard tools such as ADOS-2, ADI-R, or DIVA-5 may be used. Tools are never used in isolation; clinical judgement remains central.
05
Integrated Psychological Formulation
A thoughtful synthesis of assessment findings, contextualising difficulties within the individual's life, strengths, and circumstances.
06
Written Report and Feedback Session
A comprehensive written report explaining findings, formulation, and recommendations, followed by a feedback session to discuss the report and answer questions.
Additional liaison with schools, employers, or other professionals can be arranged and is discussed transparently in advance.
Assessment Tools and Standards
Assessments may include the use of gold-standard, internationally recognised diagnostic tools where clinically appropriate. These tools provide structured frameworks for observation and interview, but are never used in isolation. Clinical judgement, formulation, and attention to the individual's unique presentation remain central to every assessment.
Tools that may be used include:
  • ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) – a semi-structured observational assessment for autism
  • ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised) – a comprehensive developmental history interview for autism
  • DIVA-5 (Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults) – a structured clinical interview for ADHD in adults
  • Standardised Rating Scales – including self-report and observer questionnaires to capture functional impact across settings
The choice of tools is always guided by the individual's age, presentation, and assessment context. Not every assessment requires every tool, and flexibility is key to ensuring a respectful, clinically sound process.
Dyslexia and Learning Differences (Adults)
Assessment for dyslexia and learning differences in adults is offered on a case-by-case basis, with a focus on understanding the individual's learning profile, cognitive strengths, and functional impact in daily life.
This assessment is particularly relevant for adults who suspect they may have dyslexia but were not identified in childhood, or for those seeking clarity to support workplace adjustments, academic accommodations, or personal understanding.
The assessment typically includes:
  • Clinical interview exploring educational history, reading and writing difficulties, and current functional impact
  • Cognitive and literacy-based assessments where appropriate
  • Formulation of learning profile, including strengths and areas of difficulty
  • Written report with practical recommendations for workplace or educational adjustments
Fees are discussed individually and depend on the scope and complexity of the assessment required.
Pre-Assessment Consultation
If you are unsure which assessment is most appropriate, or whether assessment is the right next step, you can book a 30-minute pre-assessment consultation for £75.
This consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your difficulties, explore whether assessment would be helpful, and determine which type of assessment is most suitable. Many people find this particularly useful when there is uncertainty about whether difficulties are related to autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, or other factors.
The consultation is confidential, non-judgemental, and focused entirely on clarity and next steps. If you decide to proceed with an assessment, the £75 consultation fee is deducted from the total assessment cost.
This ensures that assessment is always the right pathway for you, rather than something pursued without sufficient consideration or understanding.
When Diagnostic Criteria Are Not Met
Not everyone who seeks assessment will meet the diagnostic criteria for autism or ADHD. This does not mean your difficulties are dismissed, misunderstood, or insignificant.
Where diagnostic criteria are not met, findings are discussed carefully and sensitively. A psychological formulation is always provided, offering an alternative understanding of your difficulties and their origins. This might include attention to anxiety, trauma, attachment patterns, sensory processing differences, or other factors that may be contributing to your experience.
Where appropriate, alternative pathways or further assessment options may be recommended. This might include referral for therapeutic support, a different type of assessment, or further exploration of specific areas of difficulty.
If further work is clinically indicated and agreed, this is offered transparently and, where appropriate, at a reduced rate to ensure continuity and accessibility.
The goal is always clarity, understanding, and a pathway forward that feels meaningful and supportive.
Post-Assessment Support
Assessment does not end with a report. For many individuals and families, integrating assessment findings into daily life requires time, support, and psychological guidance.
Post-assessment support helps you make sense of the assessment, understand what the findings mean for you or your child, and develop practical strategies to support wellbeing and functioning. This is particularly valuable following a new diagnosis of autism or ADHD, or when the assessment has raised complex questions about identity, relationships, or next steps.
Post-assessment support may include:
  • Psychoeducation – understanding autism, ADHD, or other findings in a psychologically informed and neurodiversity-affirming way
  • Formulation-led Feedback – deeper exploration of the psychological formulation and what it means for you
  • Skill-based Psychological Work – practical strategies for emotional regulation, communication, sensory needs, or daily functioning
  • Adjustment and Identity Support – processing the emotional impact of a diagnosis and exploring what it means for your sense of self
  • Guidance on Reasonable Adjustments – advice on workplace, educational, or family accommodations

A focused support package is available for those seeking structured, short-term psychological support following assessment or during periods of adjustment and change.

Frequently Asked Questions: Therapy
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Therapy is not dependent on diagnosis. Many people seek therapy for emotional distress, life transitions, relationship difficulties, burnout, or a sense of feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Where a diagnosis is relevant, this can be explored thoughtfully within the work, but it is never a prerequisite for beginning therapy.
Therapy is for anyone seeking psychological support, clarity, or change. You do not need to have a label or a clear understanding of what is wrong before reaching out. Sometimes, therapy itself helps clarify what the difficulties are and what might help.
How long does therapy last?
The length of therapy varies significantly from person to person. Some people benefit from short-term, focused work lasting a few weeks or months, whilst others find longer-term, exploratory therapy more helpful, continuing for a year or more.
The duration of therapy depends on:
  • The nature and complexity of the difficulties you are experiencing
  • Your goals for therapy and what you hope to achieve
  • Your personal circumstances, resources, and preferences
  • How the work unfolds and what emerges during the therapeutic process
Therapy is always discussed collaboratively and reviewed over time. There is no obligation to continue indefinitely, and you are always free to end therapy when it feels right for you. Equally, if you need more time, that is respected and supported.
Is therapy only for adults?
No. Therapy is offered for children, teenagers, and adults, where clinically appropriate. Work with young people is always developmentally informed and considers family context, safeguarding, and the child's capacity to engage meaningfully in therapeutic work.
Therapy with children and adolescents may involve:
  • Play-based or creative approaches for younger children
  • Talking therapy adapted to the young person's developmental stage
  • Family sessions or parent consultation where helpful
  • Collaboration with schools or other professionals, with appropriate consent
The safety and wellbeing of the child or young person is always the priority, and any concerns are managed carefully and in line with professional safeguarding responsibilities.
Do you work with neurodivergent clients?
Yes. Dr Sterzi offers neurodiversity-affirming psychological therapy for autistic and ADHD individuals, including support with emotional regulation, burnout, identity, relationships, and life transitions.
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy means:
  • Respecting and valuing neurodivergent ways of being, thinking, and experiencing the world
  • Not attempting to 'fix' or 'normalise' autistic or ADHD traits
  • Understanding masking, sensory differences, and social exhaustion
  • Supporting wellbeing, self-acceptance, and navigating a neurotypical world
  • Adapting therapeutic approaches to suit neurodivergent communication and processing styles
Many neurodivergent individuals have experienced therapy that felt invalidating, misunderstanding, or focused on compliance rather than wellbeing. This practice aims to offer something different: psychologically informed, ethically grounded, and genuinely affirming.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential within professional and legal limits. This means that what you discuss in therapy remains private and is not shared with anyone without your explicit consent.
However, there are important exceptions where confidentiality may need to be breached:
  • If there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, including risk of suicide or violence
  • If there is a safeguarding concern involving a child or vulnerable adult
  • If information is required by law, such as a court order
  • If there is a risk of terrorism or serious crime
These limits are explained clearly before therapy begins and are outlined fully in the Client Information Pack. If a situation arises where confidentiality needs to be considered, this is always discussed with you first wherever possible, unless doing so would increase risk.
Do you work with insurance providers?
Yes. Insightful Psychology works with several private health insurers, including AXA, Bupa, WPA, Allianz, and Vitality.
If you wish to use private health insurance to fund therapy or assessment, you will need to:
  • Check with your insurer whether psychological services are covered under your policy
  • Obtain pre-authorisation from your insurer before beginning treatment
  • Provide the necessary policy details and authorisation codes
Insurance-funded therapy is confidential and is not shared with employers, even if your employer provides the insurance policy. Insurers typically receive only basic information such as session dates and diagnostic codes, not detailed clinical content.
If your insurance does not cover the full cost, or if sessions exceed your policy limit, you will be responsible for any additional fees. This is always discussed transparently before treatment begins.
Frequently Asked Questions: Assessment
Which assessment do I need?
Many people are unsure which assessment is most appropriate. Difficulties with attention, learning, emotional regulation, or relationships can have different underlying causes, and it is not always obvious whether autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, or other factors are involved.
A pre-assessment consultation can help clarify the most suitable pathway. During this brief, confidential discussion, we explore your difficulties, consider what might be contributing to them, and determine whether assessment would be helpful and, if so, which type.
Some people benefit from a specific autism or ADHD assessment, whilst others may need a broader differential psychological assessment to explore multiple possibilities. The consultation ensures that assessment is the right next step for you, rather than something pursued without sufficient clarity or understanding.
What if I don't meet criteria for ASD or ADHD?
Not meeting diagnostic criteria does not mean your difficulties are dismissed, insignificant, or misunderstood. Assessment is not simply about whether you 'pass' or 'fail' a diagnostic threshold. It is about understanding your experience, formulating what is happening, and identifying what might help.
Where there is a strong alternative formulation, this is discussed carefully and sensitively. This might include attention to:
  • Anxiety, trauma, or attachment difficulties that may present similarly to autism or ADHD
  • Sensory processing differences without meeting full autism criteria
  • Executive functioning difficulties linked to other factors
  • Relational or systemic factors contributing to your difficulties
Where appropriate, guidance or further assessment options may be recommended, such as therapy, a different type of assessment, or referral to another specialist. Any further work is discussed transparently, and where clinically indicated, may be offered at a reduced rate to ensure continuity and accessibility.
Are assessments based on one test?
No. There is no single test that can diagnose autism or ADHD. Assessment is a comprehensive, multi-faceted process that integrates multiple sources of information to build a holistic understanding of the individual.
A thorough assessment includes:
  • Clinical interviews exploring current difficulties, developmental history, and functional impact
  • Developmental history gathered from the individual and, where possible, family members or carers
  • Recognised assessment tools where clinically appropriate, such as ADOS-2, ADI-R, or DIVA-5
  • Standardised rating scales to capture difficulties across different settings (home, work, social contexts)
  • Clinical observation during assessment sessions
  • Psychological formulation synthesising all information into a coherent understanding
Tools and questionnaires are important, but they are never used in isolation. Clinical judgement and formulation remain central to every assessment, ensuring that the individual's unique experience is understood and respected.
Do assessments include medication?
No. Assessments at Insightful Psychology are psychological and do not involve medication prescription. Dr Sterzi is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, and therefore does not prescribe medication.
However, if you are seeking an ADHD assessment and are considering medication, the assessment report can be shared with a psychiatrist or prescribing clinician who can make decisions about medication based on the psychological assessment findings.
Many people seek ADHD assessment without any intention of pursuing medication, and this is entirely valid. Assessment can be valuable for self-understanding, workplace or educational adjustments, and accessing non-medication support such as therapy or coaching.
If medication is something you are considering, this can be discussed during the assessment process, and guidance can be provided on appropriate next steps and referral pathways.
Is post-assessment support available?
Yes. Post-assessment support is available and is often highly recommended, particularly following a new diagnosis of autism or ADHD.
Receiving a diagnosis can be emotionally complex. Some people feel relief and validation, whilst others feel grief, confusion, or uncertainty about what it means for their identity and future. Post-assessment support provides space to process these feelings and integrate the findings into your life in a meaningful, helpful way.
Support may include:
  • Psychoeducation about autism, ADHD, or other findings in a neurodiversity-affirming framework
  • Skill-based psychological work to support emotional regulation, communication, or daily functioning
  • Identity and adjustment support to explore what the diagnosis means for you and your sense of self
  • Practical guidance on workplace or educational adjustments, disclosing diagnosis, or accessing further support
Post-assessment support can be offered as individual sessions or as a focused 4-session package (£450), depending on your needs and preferences. This is discussed during the feedback session, and there is no pressure to commit to further work if it does not feel right for you.
